Six extremists surrender `Maoists constitute action teams'

By Our Staff Reporter

KARIMNAGAR, JAN. 30. Six extremists, including a minor girl belonging to the CPI (Maoist), surrendered before the Superintendent of Police, Rajiv Ratan, here on Sunday.

Mr. Ratan told newsmen that the extremists surrendered as they were disillusioned with party ideology and owing to ill-health. While Peddaboina Swapna (16), Thudicherla Raju (22), Vavilla Sridhar (22), Gugulothu Sougram (28) were dalam members, Jatoth Ramsing (25) was a courier. Ramagiri Durgaiah (25) was an active militant. All the six were working with the Jilani Begum dalam active in the Mahadevur area.

He charged that the naxalites were luring innocent youth and children into their fold by promising them a better life.

Taking advantage of the truce period, the Maoists had formed action teams with three members in each team in all dalams to commit offences and kill individual targets. Besides, all cadres were given weapons to commit offences and some senior leaders of the party were being given some honorarium every month to meet their personal expenses.

These startling revelations were made by some surrendered naxalites. Vavilla Sridhar, who joined the party five years ago and handled SLR and sten gun in the dalam, told newsmen that the party gave him was giving him Rs. 200 per month to meet his personal expenses.

He said the Maoists had built up a semi-underground cadre. They would travel along with the dalam for about one month and later return to their village to collect information.

Ramagiri Durgaiah said that he joined the party as a militant and carried a DBBL weapon.

Gogulothu Sougram, who worked in the party for two years and participated in a bus-burning case and beating up of a ZPTC member, said the Maoists had taken up mass recruitments in interior areas.

He said a majority of youth were joining the fold attracted by revolutionary songs and weapons.
