Vijayawada
By Our Special Correspondent
VIJAYAWADA, JAN. 30. Human rights activist and Hyderabad Central University professor, G. Haragopal, has called upon different sections of society including the Left wing to work for ensuring the success of the ongoing peace process between the Government and the Maoists. Delivering the 22nd Kambhampati Satyanarayana (senior) Memorial Lecture organised by the Visaalandhra Vignana Samiti here on Saturday, he described the dialogue between the Government and Maoists as a "historic opportunity for long-term peace in the State." There was a need for an extensive debate on the peace process initiated as well as its benefits and constraints.
Commitment missing
In this context, he lamented that there was a marked change in the attitude of the Government, which was evident from the latest developments. The Government appeared to have initiated the first round of talks to fulfil its poll promise and the same commitment could not be seen now. With the Government giving prominence to the clause pertaining to weapons rather than viewing the peace talks as a political process, the State was turning into a `police raj'. In view of the recent developments, it had become imperative on part of all the sections of society to take the peace process forward. In this context, he also wanted the Maoists to take note of the changes taking place in society. Earlier, the Visaalandhra Vignana Samiti treasurer, Subba Raju felicitated Mr. Haragopal. The Vissalandhra general manager, Y. Chenchaiah, welcomed the gathering.
