Reach out to rural women, NGOs told

By Our Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA, JAN. 30. The Krishna District Velugu Project Director, Vani Mohan, has urged non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to play a greater role in women empowerment.

Speaking at the inaugural of Mahila Utsav-2005, organised by Jan Shikshan Samsthan (JSS), Vijayawada, under the auspices of the Ministry of Human Resource Development here on Sunday, she said involvement of NGOs in uplift of women was not up to the expected levels. "They should expand horizons and reach out to women in villages who need counselling more than anything else," she said.

Citing incidents wherein members of Mahila Samakhya fought a relentless battle seeking justice to victims of domestic violence and other atrocities perpetrated against the fairer sex, she said empowerment of women would be possible only when they were made to come out of the cocoon.

Self-sufficiency

Speaking on various Velugu programmes, she said the main objective was to help women achieve self-sufficiency. The social action committees constituted at the village and the mandal-level were a big success.

She said financial assistance was being extended to women who were forced to take to flesh trade due to financial problems at home. The move was part of the effort to curb the menace of women trafficking, she said.

Emphasising the need to impart the right kind of training to women who aspired to set up a self-help unit, she said provision of marketing support was a key factor. She advised the JSS to conduct a buyer-seller meet and act as a mediator between producers and marketers.

The Guntur district Joint Collector, Janardhana Reddy, spoke. The Krishna District Women and Child Development Agency Project Director, K. Suhasini, presided. The secretary of the Krishna District Industrial and Agricultural Exhibition Society, Narayana Prasad, was also present.
