Sait Nagjee tournament to be revived

By Our Sports Reporter

KOZHIKODE, JAN. 30. The Sait Nagjee all-India football tournament, once the most important annual event in the city's sporting calendar, will be back this year after a gap of a decade.

"The Kozhikode Corporation will extend full support to the tournament," Mayor Thottathil Ravindran said at a press conference here on Sunday. "The Kozhikode District Football Association had approached the Corporation with this proposal and we are of course happy to support the event. The tournament would be held in April."

The tournament will be held at the Corporation Stadium, which is ready for action again after the renovation work that took nearly eight years. "Admittedly, it took us a long time to complete the work, because of many reasons. And some more work remains to be done, as we still have to lay the synthetic track, build a grand stand and install lights. We will require another 15 crores for that, having spent already 11.5 crores on the stadium," Mr. Ravindran said.

The first match on the stadium will be played on Tuesday, between East Bengal and State Bank of Travancore in the NFL.
