Kerala wins athletics crown

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JAN. 30. Kerala won the title in the athletic events of the National Women's Games (group III) here at the Central stadium on Sunday. The host added one more gold medal on the last day of the competition to top the table with 103 points. Orissa (61) and West Bengal (39) finished second and third respectively.

National school games champion C.T. Raji won the 100m hurdles in 14.8 seconds while Saroj Singh (Rajasthan) and Orissa's 4x400 relay squad won the other two gold medals on the final day's competition.

Anju K. Thomas ended Bengal's domination in table tennis as she won the singles title. Anju came back from behind to overcome Poulomi Sinha (Bengal) 11-9, 4-11, 11-13, 7-12, 11-9, 11-8, 11-4 in the final.

P. Jyotsna of Andhra Pradesh completed a double in badminton. Jyotsna won the singles title defeating teammate Ird Sravani 11-3, 8-11, 13-10. Jyotsna and Susweta beat Zina Raveendran and C. Dhanya 15-5, 15-8 to win the doubles title.

Kerala Sports Council President C. Mohanachandran gave away the prizes to the winner. Olympians K.M. Beenamol and K.M. Binu were felicitated at the closing function.

Athletics: 100m hurdles: 1. C.T. Raji (Ker), 2. S. Bindu Sri Madhavi (AP), 3. K.A. Shamlamol (AP) (14.9s); 1500m: 1. Saroj Singh (Raj), 2. Jishi Joseph (Ker), 3. Kiran Tiwari (Utr), (4:45.00); 4x400 relay: 1. Orissa, 2. West Bengal, 3. Kerala (3:53.50).

Table Tennis (final): Anjali K. Thomas (Ker) bt Poulmi Sinha (Ben) 1-9, 4-11, 11-13, 7-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-4. Doubles: Agamani Mitra & Arpita bt Swati Sharma & Vinmita (Uttr) 11-5, 11-6, 11-8.

Badminton (singles): Final: P. Jyotsna (AP) bt Ird Sravani (AP) 11-3, 8-11, 13-10. Losers' final: Roshni Gupta (Del) bt Heena Kapur (Pun) 11-5, 6-11, 11-8. Doubles (final): P. Jyotsna & Susweta (AP) bt Zina Raveendran & C. Dhanya (Ker) 15-5, 15-8. Loser's final: Sharoni Yadav & Garoni Yadav (U.P.) bt Roshni Gupta & Harsimran (Del) 15-3, 15-8.
