`Fight divisive tendencies'

By Our Staff Reporter

KOTTAYAM, JAN. 30. The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, has lauded the role of the Church South India (CSI) and its predecessor organisations for the yeomen service done in the area of modern education.

Mr. Chandy was speaking on the occasion of the valedictory function of the jubilee celebrations of the Madhya Kerala Diocese here today.

He said it was the concerted efforts by missionaries during the last century which enabled Kerala to forge ahead in English education.

Mr. Chandy said the church had also helped in the uplift of the economically backward sections of society.

Ideals of the church

The jubilee is a celebration of the ideals inculcated by the church in the minds of the people, Mr. Chandy added.

The Bishop, Thomas Samuel, head of the Madhya Kerala diocese, who spoke on the occasion said that the mission of the church was to establish `peace societies.' However, new colonising forces are trying to create divisive tendencies among communities, he alleged.

He urged people to remain united and fight against such tendencies.

Vayalar Ravi; K. Suresh Kurup (both MPs); Bishop John C Itty; David Hansen among others spoke on the occasion.
