Appeal to French Government

NEW DELHI JAN. 30. Activists of the National Akali Dal staged a demonstration at Jantar Mantar here today protesting against the French government's decision to ban wearing of turbans in school.

Addressing the gathering, the Akali Dal president, Paramjeet Singh Pamma, said the move had badly hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community. "It is our culture and the Sikhs have a fundamental right to wear turbans," he added.

He appealed to the French government to lift the ban against wearing of turbans.

Cheque handed over

NEW DELHI JAN. 30. The Director General of Sashastra Seema Bal, Himanshu Kumar, accompanied by its Additional Director General. G.S. Rajagopal, presented a cheque for Rs. 60 lakhs to the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund on Saturday. While accepting the cheque, the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, said that the SSB had a very vital role to play in the security of the country. The SSB is a Central para-military force entrusted with the responsibility of guarding the Indo-Nepal and Indo-Bhutan borders.

Fund-raising match

NEW DELHI JAN. 30. To raise fund for the tsunami victims, the Air Hostess Academy organised an inter-zone cricket match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Sunday. The match was played between different branches of AHA from various cities across the country.

The chief guest on the occasion was the former Indian opener Chetan Chauhan. Other who were present included the former wicket-keeper Nayan Mongia and pace bowler Atul Wassan. The money raised through sale of tickets would be donated to the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund.
