No one to man traffic islands here

By M. Raghuram

MANGALORE, JAN. 30. Unregulated vehicular traffic is the most talked about problem in this fast growing port city, thanks to the lack of application on the part of the Mangalore City Corporation and the traffic police. Barring a few, there are hardly any traffic islands in Mangalore.

Like motorists, traffic police seem to be confused about the problem. The Avery Junction (on Mother Teresa Road), which has five roads converging within a radius of 50 metres, is neglected with motorists coming from Balmatta forced to veer on to the other road joining the circle. Vehicles coming from Sturrock Road have to get around a blind corner before turning towards Moti Mahal. To make matters worse, traffic policemen are not posted there.

At the other end of the city at Kottara Cross Road joining Bejai Road, the intersection has three roads running diagonal to one another. The road joining this circle from Bejai side was widened recently, and chaos prevails

there. Since it forms a vital link to one half of the city, this road needs good traffic management.

Many of the traffic islands are unmanned in the city. They include Kankanady Junction, which is one of the largest in the city. This circle has traffic coming from Falnir, Jeppu and a part of the traffic from NH 48 and NH 17. Just half a kilometre away, the Karavali Circle, which gets traffic from Kankanady, NH 48 and from Balmatta side, is yet another busy unmanned circle.

Further up, at Balmatta Circle (collector's gate), five roads converge and not one of them has stop lines or pedestrian crossing.

The way to the residence of the Deputy Commissioner is through the circle. The local shopkeepers here say that the traffic policeman appears here only when the Deputy Commissioner is using the road.

Vehicular traffic at the Bunts Hostel Circle is chaotic. Vehicles from Jyothi and Light House side and from P.V.S. Circle come to the circle.
