GONDA (UTTAR PRADESH), JAN. 30. Nepal's Maoist extremists have targeted Indian-origin businessmen residing along the Indo-Nepal border in that country, police said today. Several Indian families, particularly the business class settled in Nepal, had migrated to nearby areas of Uttar Pradesh following ransom demands and harassment by Maoists. Police said that although the Centre had strengthened security on the border, Maoists managed to infiltrate into the country. Senior police officials in Lucknow, said that there was no Maoist threat in Uttar Pradesh and "all possible steps were being taken to prevent the entry of anti-social elements through porous borders." Reports said that Maoist outfits had recently sent threatening letters to businessmen and demanded ransom. A Nepali citizen of Indian origin, Farooq Beg, who has lived here for more than 25 years, received a letter demanding Rs. 50,000. The Vishwakarma cement factory also received a letter a few days back. The Maoists threatened forced closure of the unit if they were not paid Rs. 20 lakhs immediately. Ramji Mishra, another Nepali of Indian origin, survived an attack by the Maoists last year at Mujhena village in Nepal's Krishnanagar district. Mr. Mishra, subsequently shifted his business operations to India. UNI
