JAIPUR, JAN. 30. Participants in a workshop on children's rights here over the week-end called for protecting the childhood against all forms of exploitation and felt that generation of awareness by mass media could serve the cause of evolving a "child friendly" atmosphere in the society at large. The day-long workshop was organised jointly by the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) and the National Initiative for Child Protection to discuss the role of media and people's movements in safeguarding children's rights. Social activists and media professionals, who attended the event, said the creation of sensitivity among various sections of society would lead to proper care of poor and disadvantaged children. The former Director of Public Relations of the Rajasthan Government, Manohar Prabhakar, said the mass media should desist from sensationalising the crime relating to teenagers and instead lay emphasis on promoting social concerns regarding children. Surjit Singh of IDS also called for caution while reporting the matters concerning children and adolescents. A reference to media's role in protecting the children affected by calamities was made on the occasion while drawing the participants' attention to the spate of offers to adopt children orphaned by the recent tsunami tragedy in Sri Lanka.
