Imposition of Hindi in TV programmes opposed

By Sushanta Talukdar

GUWAHATI, JAN. 30. A citizens' meeting held here today opposed Doordarshan making it mandatory for programmes intended for its Programme Production Centre (NE) to be made in Hindi and not in the local languages and dialects of the northeast.

The meeting, organised by the North-East Film and Television Producers-Directors' Association, however, clarified that the association was not against any individual opting to make programmes in Hindi. It was only opposed to the imposition of Hindi as the sole medium of expression for fiction-based television programmes for the centre. It endorsed the association's demand that programmes should be allocated to the producers of the region.

Several luminaries from the field of art and culture, including Gautom Bora, writer and award-winning filmmaker, and Atulananda Goswami, writer, cited numerous examples how the Hindi versions made for Doordarshan by producers from outside the region distorted the actual essence and spirit of the creative work.

They said the programmes made for the northeast must represent the life and society of the region. The use of local languages with supportive subtitles could alone express the local issues and nuances in the right perspective.

`Deliberate design'

National award-winning filmmaker Charu Kamal Hazarika said the "nature of subjects short-listed in Doordarshan's notification reflects a deliberate design to facilitate the entry of outside producers, primarily from the commercial channels."

The meeting resolved that the association would continue with its agitation till Doordarshan withdraw its policy of imposition of Hindi and facilitating the entry of outside producers for making television programmes intended for the northeast.
