BHOPAL, JAN. 30. After losing the Bhopal Mayor's post to the Congress party in the recently concluded municipal elections, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has received yet another jolt in the Bhopal rural belt as majority of the BJP supported candidates have been defeated in the Bhopal district panchayat elections. The Madhya Pradesh Panchayat elections, which concluded today with the formal announcement of results, were not contested on party lines. Nevertheless, the stakes were high for the two main rival parties -- the ruling BJP and the Congress party -- elections as most of the candidates were being supported openly by these parties. Notwithstanding the drubbing in Bhopal, there was plenty of excitement in the BJP camp here as the district Panchayat election results were formally announced today. The State BJP spokesman, Deepak Vijayvargiya, claimed this evening that the BJP supported candidates have won more than two-third of the district Panchayat seats. He said that the BJP supported candidates are in clear majority in at least 27 of the 45 districts. Only three of the 10 BJP supported candidates have been declared elected as district Panchayat representatives in Bhopal. Despite the dismal showing in the Bhopal election, the ruling party managers are hopeful that Harinarayan Patidar, who has the open support of the State Chief Minister, Babulal Gaur and has been elected as a Panchayat representative, would manage to muster majority support and win the Bhopal district Panchayat president's post. The Bhopal district Panchayat has 10 members and the president's post is reserved for the other backward classes (OBCs).
