CHENNAI, JAN. 30 . The growing popularity of information technology translates into tremendous opportunities as well as challenges for chartered accountants, the Union Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Dayanidhi Maran, said today. Inaugurating a national continuing professional education (CPE) conference of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) here, he said the CAs must reorient themselves to offer value-added services and counter the challenges that accompany the changes. It was in this context the significance of continuing professional education programmes got enhanced, Mr. Maran said. The Chief Commissioner of Income-Tax, Binoy Gupta, urged the CAs to gear themselves up by acquiring a higher degree of proficiency in different fields to make the most of the "large number of new and challenging opportunities" that lay ahead. These include the upcoming value-added tax regime; the new taxation regime relating to international taxation and transfer pricing and the banking and business process outsourcing sectors. Calling upon the CAs to take the maximum benefit of the CPE programmes organised by the ICAI, Mr. Gupta said that with enormous opportunities, the professionals must become more responsible. The Chairman of ICAI's Professional Development Committee, S. Santhanakrishnan, said since the profession of chartered accountants was self-regulated, there was little need for the Government to introduce legislation. Stating this, he said the Chartered Accountants Regulation Act, brought in by the previous National Democratic Alliance, required some amount of rethinking. G. Ramaswamy, Chairman of the Institute's CPE committee, gave an overview of the conference, while the conference convener, V. Murali, urged the CAs to contribute liberally for the tsunami relief and rehabilitation activities.
