TIRUCHI, JAN. 30. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 31.8 degree Celsius and a minimum temperature of 21.4 degree Celsius.

Traders protest against VAT

For the second consecutive day today, a section of traders in the district hoisted black flags in front of their shops to show their protest against the introduction of value added tax from April 1. Police sources here said the flags were hoisted in front of 80 shops at Thuraiyur today.

Plea to increase halt time

Members of the Srirangam Traders Association as well as residents have urged the railway authorities to increase the halt time of Pallavan and Rockfort Express trains at the Srirangam station from two to five minutes.

In a representation sent in this regard to the Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu, recently, the association said passengers were finding it difficult to board and alight within two minutes.

`Ban use of mobile phones'

The Tamil Nadu Government Transport Corporation Employees Union, affiliated to the AITUC, has urged the Government to ban use of mobile phones while riding vehicles.

In a statement issued here yesterday, its general secretary, N. Mani, said that the practice of using mobile phones while riding vehicles would affect free flow of traffic. The government should enact legislations for confiscation of cell phones besides punishing the violators.

Mettur level

The level in the Mettur dam stood at 55.27 feet today.

The inflow was 116 cusecs and there was no discharge.
