KOCHI, JAN. 30. The 20th death anniversary of musician and theatre personality Vaikom Vasudevan Nair was observed here today. In his memorial speech at a meeting held at the Kalikota Palace, Thripunithura, mridangam maestro Mavelikkara Velukutty Nair remembered Vasudevan Nair for being as much a socialist as a musician. Musician Mavelikkara Prabhakara Varma said Vasudevan Nair did not hesitate to give respect to musicians junior to him. Musician M.G. Radhakrishnan said the stardom that Vasudevan Nair and his contemporaries enjoyed in those times was nothing compared with what filmstars enjoy today. Film actor Suresh Gopi presented the Vaikom Vasudevan Nair Smaraka Award to musician Sreevalsan J. Menon. An audio CD of songs composed by Vasudevan Nair was released on the occasion. Sankaran Namboodiri presented a vocal concert later. C. Rajendran, Mavelikkara Velukutty Nair and Thripunithura Radhakrishnan accompanied him on the violin, mridangam and ghatom, respectively.
