KOCHI, JAN. 30. The 57th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was observed in different parts of the city today with prayer meetings, `swadeshi' meets and seminars organised by various organisations. The Gandhi Vichara Kendram, Changampuzha Cultural Centre and Poornodaya Book Trust observed the day with a get-together of persons trained in swadeshi soap making and exhibition of swadeshi products and Gandhian literature. Training in soap making was also held in the afternoon. The Gandhi Peace Foundation, Kerala Santhi Samithy and Gandhi Bhavan Committee observed the day as `Viswa Santhi Day'. The conclusion of Maithry Project - 2004, peace awareness campaign for students, was held at the function conducted at Gandhi Bhavan, Kacheripady. Former Kerala High Court Judge P.K. Shamsuddin and Cusat former Vice-Chancellor M.V. Paily were among those who attended the function. At the District Congress Committee (DCC) office, Martyrs' Day was observed with the DCC president, K.P. Dhanapalan, garlanding the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. The meeting was inaugurated by the KPCC general secretary, Kodikkunnil Suresh, the DCC office said. The Kerala Congress(Secular) party observed the day as Viswa Santhi Day. The memorial meeting presided over by the party district president, Kuruvila Mathews, was inaugurated by the party State general secretary, E.K. Hassan Kutty. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) district committee organised a meeting to mark the day. The NCP district vice-president, P.A. Bose, the treasurer, K.M. Kunjumon, secretaries V.G. Raveendran, B.A. Ashraf and V.J. George spoke. The National Labour Organisation (NLO) held a meeting to mark Martyrs' Day at the NLO Bhavan. The freedom fighter K.C. George presided over the meeting. The NLO all-India vice-president G.B. Bhatt spoke on the occasion. The DYFI observed Martyrs' Day at a meeting organised by the Yuva Jana Sangamam at Edappally. Critic M.N. Vijayan inaugurated the meeting. The DYFI district president, John Fernandes, spoke on the occasion.
