Bandh disruption

Sir, — With the murder of Paritala Ravi, bandh disrupted daily activities and APSRTC buses bore the brunt of party activists' wrath. Shops and establishments were forcibly closed. When Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated, my father had to walk 20 km as suburban electric trains were disrupted. That was a natural protest and homage to the father of our nation. When Indira Gandhi one of our Prime Ministers was assassinated bandh was organised, and I had to walk 10 km. What right have political parties to disrupt the life of the common man?

Tamil channels sidelined

Sir, — This is to highlight the raw deal meted out to Tamil subscribers of Hathway Cable Network in the twin cities.

To start with, Raj TV was cut a few months ago and the latest casualty is Jaya TV, which was cut to accommodate Disney Cartoon Network. DD Podhigai is unavailable to most viewers, as it is relayed in a tail-end slot of the UHF band. Hopefully, Hathway will modify its functioning at least from now.

Wild goose chase

Sir, — I recently visited BSNL's stall at the exhibition on coming to know that it was offering special schemes. When I wanted to book a broadband connection, I was directed from table to table and finally told that they were not taking the bookings in the stall. Senior officers were reluctant to answer any queries

Old city bypassed

Sir, — It is surprising that though BSNL launched broadband Internet everywhere in the country including Hyderabad, the facility is not available in Charminar exchange area, which covers most of the old city. When the area manager was contacted he put the blame on public saying there weren't enough registrations. One reason for the poor response is the heavy package of Rs. 1200 for business users. They too should be given the same minimum package of Rs. 500 as domestic users.

Hike hits common man

Sir, — The recent hike in phone calls from public booths from Rs.1.25 per call to Rs.2 is exorbitant and unjustified. These phones are generally patronised by the common manand the monstrous hike of 60 per cent is extremely burdensome. I appeal to the BSNL to withdraw this arbitrary hike and reduce it to Rs. 1.50.

Response

Sir, — Apropos the letter "Taken for ride by RTC" ( The Hindu , 24.1.05) in which a passenger complained about non-refund of due amount by the conductor of bus No. AP-29 T-2844, operated on Tarnaka-Jubilee Bus Station route on 17.12.2004, the amount due -- Rs.6 -- was sent to him through money order on 20.01.2005 and the conductor responsible was pulled up and counselled.
