MADURAI, JAN.30. The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged the Indian Railways to introduce a daytime Fast Passenger train between Madurai and Chennai, as this sector was highly patronised by the public. In a memorandum submitted to the General Manger of Southern Railway, Ramesh Chandra, here recently, its president, S. Rethinavelu, said there was also a need to introduce a direct train between Madurai and Tirupati and a Jan Shatabdi between Chennai and Madurai. He said there was an urgent need for the early implementation of Madurai - Kottayam new line. The Dindigul - Sabarimala broad gauge line project should be taken up immediately in the interest of the people from the southern districts. Similarly, the Dindigul - Coimbatore metre gauge line should be converted into broad gauge and a new BG line should be laid between Madurai and Tuticorin via Aruppukottai. The conversion of the Virudhunagar - Manamadurai section should be taken up for early implementation. The other demands included, doubling of BG line between Madurai and Dindigul, converting the Kudal Nagar Railway Station at Madurai as a regular passenger railway station for stoppage of all express trains, immediate steps to expedite the Shencottah - Tirunelveli - Tiruchendur and Shencottah - Punalur - Kollam BG line projects, extension of Jodhpur-Chennai Express to Nagercoil, extension of Hyderabad - Chennai Express to Madurai, introduction of inter-port express train between Mangalore and Tuticorin, increasing the frequency of Kanyakumari - Howrah Express and that of Madurai - Delhi Tamil Nadu Sampark Kranti Express.
