CHENNAI, JAN. 31. Jamal Mohammed (Tiruchi) won the sixth Rev. Fr. L.D. Murphy inter-collegiate football tournament with a 2-0 victory over Sir Theagaraya (Chennai) in the final at the Loyola College here on Monday. Ten minutes into the first session, A. Sivakumar put Jamal ahead through a header off a lob from J. Rakesh. An enthusiastic bunch, which was figuring in its second final, the Jamal team continued to put pressure on Theagaraya. Kali Alaudeen, who has caught the eye with his striking ability, scored in the 30th minute. After neatly taking a pass, Alaudeen did not waste time in unleashing a strong grounder that widened the margin. Even the few forays the defence-oriented Theagaraya team managed in the first half were absent in the second. Even Jamal took it lightly in the belief that Thegaraya would not score, resulting in pedestrian football for the remaining part though the former missed two clear goal-scoring opportunities during the closing stages. Apart from the Trophy, Jamal received a cash prize of Rs. 5,000 while Theagaraya took home Rs. 3,000. During the prize distribution function, M. Sathiyaseelan, Director of Physical Education, Loyola College, announced that the "assessment committee did not find any goalkeeper good enough" to be mentioned in the special prizes list. M. A. Jacob, Proprietor, M.A. Jacob & Co., gave away the prizes. Fr. Albert Muthumalai, Principal, Loyola College, also spoke on the occasion.
