Houses, crops damaged in hailstorm

ADILABAD, JAN. 31. As many as 25 houses were damaged in Laxmanchanda mandal during the rain and hailstorm on January 29 and 30. One of the houses was fully damaged. Eleven goats too perished in Kadam mandal according to the official loss assessment.

The total loss of standing crop in 15 mandals in Adilabad district was estimated at Rs. 5 crores in a total of 26,118 acres as per the survey report. The crop loss includes red gram in 3,425 acres, sunflower in 1,479 acres, bengal gram in 1,173 acres, green gram in 1,138 acres, linseed in 885 acres and sesamum in 805 acres.

Meanwhile, Adilabad and Nirmal divisions received good rainfall yesterday night. Kubeer mandal recorded the maximum rainfall at 168 mm followed by 129 mm at Bela, 117 mm at Adilabad, 116 mm at Gudihatnoor, 115 mm at Jainad and 108 mm at Ichoda.

TDP for compensation

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) on Monday sought compensation to the farmers who lost their standing crop in the hailstorm and rain during the last three days. The party criticised the district administration for being unable to carry out crop damage surveys despite the time lapse.

Addressing reporters here, the Bejjur Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency member, Palvai Sudhakar Rao, the Mandal Parishad president, Koppula Shankar, the TDP district SC cell president, Srihari, the district organising secretary, B. Goverdhan Reddy, and the spokesman, Jogu Ramanna, said five mandals in Sirpur constituency were badly hit.

`Rs. 7-crore loss'

Their survey revealed a loss of standing crop worth over Rs. 7 crores during the last three days. Besides, they claimed that hundreds of houses were damaged due to the rain. The TDP leaders circulated photographs of damaged crops and houses in support of their claims. Jowar and sunflower crops were the worst hit, they pointed out.
