Ryots urged to go for bio-diesel plants

By Our Staff Reporter

A technical consultant of Sutra Department of Mechanical Engineering, Vidya S. Swamy, addressing a seminar on bio-diesel in Cuddapah on Monday.

CUDDAPAH, JAN. 31. Bio-diesel plantations were a boon to farmers, hard-hit by successive droughts, the technical consultant of Sutra Department of Mechanical Engineering, Bangalore, Vidya S. Swamy, said on Monday.

Addressing a seminar on `alternative fuel - bio-diesel' during `Cuddapotsavalu', she called upon ryots to raise bio-diesel plantations in wastelands, as it would fetch them high returns besides generating employment. "Farmers must raise neem, jatropha and kanuga trees, which can withstand prolonged dry spells," she said.

Kanuga trees yield bio-diesel, bio-petrol, bio-ethanol, bio-gas, fibres and fats which could be used in place of motor oils, Dr. Vidya Swamy said. Bio-diesel oil extracts could be used as fuel to run pumpsets and two-wheelers, as petrol and diesel costs were constantly rising, she said. Pulp left after oil extraction would also fetch revenue, she added.

Income generation

A technical consultant of Jain Drip Irrigation Company, N. Narayana, said farmers of Lingala mandal were raising jatropha plantations, which were fetching substantial income. They could be raised in land unfit for cultivation, rocky soil and hillocks, along roadsides and on road dividers, he said.

The Superintendent of Police, V.C. Sajjanar, of bio-diesel plantations gained prominence due to research. Farmers should economically benefit by raising the plantations, he said.

The Project Director of DWMA, P. Easwara Reddy, the ZP Deputy CEO, Dayakara Reddy, the DFO, Suryanarayana, farmers club and watershed members and polytechnic college students participated.
