NAGAPATTINAM, JAN. 31. The World Vision of India handed over 600 temporary shelters for tsunami-affected families to the Collector, J. Radhakrishnan, at a function held here yesterday. Its national director, Jayakumar Christian, who handed over the shelters, said the organisation was engaged in relief operations in 11 areas in the country and its strategies were aimed at relief, education for children, psycho-socio development and provision of a comfortable livelihood for the people concentrated in camps. He said the organisation would serve the people with guidance and help from government departments. The organisation's Financial Officer, Sam Nirmal, Director for Communications, Jayanth Vincent, and Director for Emergency Relief and Disaster Management, Franklin, explained the relief operations carried out by them. Relton Samuel, and M.J. Daniel of the organisation participated.
Global Uplift gesture
Global Uplift (USA) and K.K. Shah Charitable Trust, Gujarat, handed 162 temporary shelters and other infrastructure to the district administration yesterday for the tsunami victims. Under the auspices of the two trusts managed by Prakash K. Shah (son of late K.K. Shah, former Governor of Tamil Nadu), relief work for Rs.15 lakhs was undertaken for Akaraipettai. The trusts reconstructed a damaged first aid centre, police outpost and school in Akkaraipettai, besides constructing 162 temporary shelters. Eric and Rev. Martin, social workers from California in the United States, visited the district yesterday. They were assisted by A. Ramaswamy, former secretary to the Tamil Nadu Governor, who represented the two trusts and was coordinator for the tsunami relief work in the State, especially in Nagapattinam. Dr. Ramaswamy said the staff of the government departments, panchayats and other officials extended full co-operation. John Sehoch, dairy expert from California representing Global Uplift, handed over the shelters. The Sub-Collector, Umanath, handed over the keys of the shelters to the occupants and distributed free provisions organised by Global Uplift to the families. He thanked Prakash K. Shah for his timely help.
