Six naxalites surrender

NALGONDA: Six newly-recruited naxalites, including a minor girl, surrendered before the Superintendent of Police, Harish Kumar Gupta, and the Officer on Special Duty (OSD), Ravinder, here on Monday. They were: Venaguri Venkateswarlu (23) of Anjanpally, Maska Govindu (20) of Peddagummadam, U. Parijatam (14) and Rasala Chandraiah (19) of Allapur, Bhukya Srinu (20) of Julubavi thanda and Pagilla Laxmamma (21) of Kotta Kambalapally. The OSD said the six joined dalams during the peace talks between the Government and Maoists. The officers said that they were anticipating more surrenders.

ACB traps medical officer

HYDERABAD: The Mahabubnagar District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO), K. Manmohan Reddy, was arrested on Monday by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on the charge of accepting Rs. 6,000 from P. Vijaya Kumari, civil assistant surgeon, for sanctioning a bill. He tested positive when subjected to a chemical test, a press release said here.

ZPTC member suspended

HYDERABAD: The Singamala ZPTC member in Anantapur district, M. Pullamma, has been suspended by the BJP president, N. Indrasena Reddy, from the party for voting against party directive in the zilla parishad byelection, according to K. Laxman, party official spokesman, in a press release here.

Jail term for ex-civic chief

CUDDAPAH: The former Cuddapah Municipal Chairman, S. Kiran Basha, was convicted in two power theft cases and sentenced to two years' imprisonment by the I Additional Junior Civil Judge of Cuddapah, I. Lakshmi, on Monday. The anti-power theft squad had booked two cases on February 14, 2000, on the charge of unauthorised drawal of power at Kiran Complex and Kiran Bar in Cuddapah owned by the former civic chief.

Student dies in roof collapse

Srikakulam: Konchada Santoshbabu, a second year degree student, was crushed to death and three others sustained minor injuries on Sunday when the roof of a building in Kanyakaparameswari temple at Palasa collapsed when road-widening work between Three Roads junction and Peddaveedhi was in progress. According eyewitnesses, the building collapsed on the poclaine and tractor but driver of the tractor escaped.

Change in IA flight timings

VISAKHAPATNAM: Indian Airlines has rescheduled its Mumbai-Vizag-Mumbai and Vizag-Hyderabad-Vizag flights from February 1 to 7 due to continued poor visibility over the airport here during morning hours. The flight from Mumbai leaves at 9.15 a.m. and arrives here at 11 a.m. and leaves for Hyderabad at 11.30 a.m., arriving there at 12.30 p.m. The flight from Hyderabad leaves at 1 p.m. and reaches here at 2 p.m. and takes off at 2.30 p.m., landing at Mumbai at 4.15 p.m. There is no change in timings of other flights from here, according to a press release from the Area Marketing Manager of IA, Bharat Kashyap, on Monday.

Two IPS officers transferred

HYDERABAD: The IGP (Crime Investigation Department), D. Boobathi Babu, has been transferred and posted as IGP (Recruitment) replacing S.V. Ramana Murthy who has been appointed IGP (Organisation). Earlier appointment of S. Venkataramana Murthy as IGP (Recruitment) was cancelled, the Government announced on Monday.

Mala Mahanadu stages dharna

HYDERABAD: Activists of the Mala Mahanadu on Monday staged a dharna at the Hyderabad Collectorate demanding withdrawal of the Assembly resolution on Scheduled Castes categorisation and implementation of GO 91. Led by P.V. Rao, president, the activists, including students from educational institutions, presented a memorandum to the Hyderabad district Collector, Arvind Kumar, listing 18 demands.

Civic chiefs' meet on Feb. 4

HYDERABAD: The Defence Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, will address a meeting of Mayors, chairpersons and floor leaders of civic bodies and contestants of wards here on February 4. K. Keshava Rao, APCC president, will chair the meeting to be held at Gandhi Bhavan. The Municipal Administration Minister, K. Ranga Rao, and senior leaders of the party will also address the meeting, according to a press release.

Book on suicide of farmers

HYDERABAD: Paladugu Parasuram, a journalist of Deeptinagar in Chandanagar, presented his book on farmers' suicide in the State to the Governor, Sushil Kumar Shinde, at Raj Bhavan on Monday and sought adequate compensation to the victims' families.

Gurukul school admission

HYDERABAD: The last date for sale of applications for admission to fifth class in Andhra Pradesh Gurukul educational institutions has been extended from January 31 to February 6. This was done following representations from Principals, an official release said here on Monday.

Stamp papers destroyed

HYDERABAD: As many as 10,39,243 non-judicial stamp papers of Rs.500 and above denomination valued at over Rs.651crores in possession of the Assistant IG (Stamps) have been destroyed on the premises of the Commissioner and IG, Registration and Stamps. This has been done in accordance with GO 899 (Revenue). A press release issued by the Commissioner on Monday said there would no circulation of non-judicial papers of over Rs.100 denomination.

eGoverance: State bags 5 awards

HYDERABAD: The State has bagged five awards for exemplary implementation of eGovernance for 2004-05 in the list announced by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances. According to an official release, the Rural eSeva scheme implemented in West Godavari district won the Golden Icon Award for `innovative operations and best practices.' Sapnet (Mana TV) of IT&T Department won the bronze icon in the same category. The use of GIS and GPS for vegetation cover mapping by the Forest Department bagged the silver Icon under `trailblazing application of the year' category. The CARD project of the Registration Department won the silver icon in the `outstanding performance in service delivery' category. The awards will be presented by the Union IT Minister, Dayanidhi Maran, at Bhubaneswar on February 3.

12 cm rainfall in Adilabad

Hyderabad: Adilabad recorded a rainfall of 12 cm on Monday under the influence of trough prevailing over parts of the State. Medak received 3 cm and Nizamabad 1 cm. There was rain at a few places in Telangana and it was isolated in Rayalaseema. The lowest temperature of 18 degree Celsius was recorded by Adilabad. Isolated rain will continue over coastal Andhra and Telangana on Tuesday while dry weather will prevail over Rayalaseema.

Rally by Mala Mahanadu

CHITTOOR: District Mala Mahanadu committee activists took out a rally from Gandhi statue to Greamspet and staged dharna before the Collector office on Monday demanding the Government to implement GO 91 and send copies to all the Government offices immediately.

DSP's promise

CUDDAPAH: The Cuddapah DSP, M. Ramaprasada Rao, on Monday promised stern action to curb eve teasing. Speaking at the Government Girls Junior College anniversary celebrations, he urged students not to fear eve teasers. The I Town CI, Narayanaswamy Reddy, promised action based on complaints received. The college principal, Santha Kumari, exhorted the girls not to stage protests, but apprise her of such problems.

Folk artistes' shows

CUDDAPAH: An eight-member folk artiste troupe staged song and dance performances at Puttaparthi centre, old bus stand and municipality office etc. in Proddatur town, under the aegis of Lok Satta. The shows were organised to create public awareness on democratic values, good governance, citizens' rights and right to information, the Lok Satta Convenor, J. Subrahmanyam, said.

Family planning camp

CUDDAPAH: Eighty women of Rayachoti, Tsundupalle and Galiveedu mandals underwent buttonhole surgery at a family planning camp at Rayachoti Government hospital on Monday, its superintendent, Vijayalakshmi, said. A surgeon of Rajampet, Ramamohan, and four doctors of Rayachoti hospital performed surgeries, she said.

Home guard selections

CUDDAPAH: Home guard selections will be held at Police Parade Grounds here on February 12, the Cuddapah SP, V.C. Sajjanar, said on Monday. SSC passed youth aged 18 could obtain application forms costing Rs. 10 each from the District Police Office from February 5 to 7, he added.

3 injured

NELLORE: Three students were injured when they came in touch with live electricity wires in Vinjamoor town on Sunday. According to information, the mishap occurred when the students, who were playing cricket, wanted to retrieve the ball, which fell upstairs, adjoining a 11 KV power line.

Aid for tsunami-hit

KURNOOL: The staff of St. Johns College of Engineering and Technology donated Rs. 17,050 towards tsunami relief. The staff led by the Principal, B. Stephen Charles, presented the cheque to the Collector, Vikas Raj, on Monday.

Free eye camp

Anantapur: Lion's Club conducted a free eye camp at Penukonda on Sunday. Sai Kaleswar has offered to conduct a mega eye camp in March to treat 10,800 patients. This camp would be conducted by Shirdi Sai Global Trust.
