Naidu vows to fight back

HYDERABAD, JAN.31. The Telugu Desam Party president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, today accused the Government of acting in a vindictive and high-handed manner by booking "false cases" and arresting scores of his partymen in connection with the incidents following Paritala Ravi's murder.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Naidu said two days after the killing, instructions went out from the Director-General of Police to all SPs and the latter were pressured to book cases. In some instances, cases under the SC and ST Atrocities Act and even attempt to murder were booked.

Urging the partymen not to get demoralised, he said the party would fight on their behalf. He told them to organise protest rallies to pressure the Government to act democratically. The TDP regime had never harassed Congressmen even though they had staged dharnas.

He said the police should have shown the same enthusiasm in nabbing those who were named in the FIR, however big they might be. He wondered what the police were doing when G. Suryanarayana Reddy alias Suri, who was stated to be the mastermind behind the killing, had used cell phones in the jail and was directing murders from there. Mr.Naidu criticised the police for failing to nab J. Srinivasa Reddy, allegedly the main shooter in the murder, and had in a TV interview stated that he would surrender after killing two more persons.

Team for Delhi

Mr. Naidu said he would lead a delegation of party leaders to Delhi on February 2 to meet the President, the Prime Minister, the Vice-President, the Home Minister and the Lok Sabha Speaker. A delegation of party MPs would also meet leaders of all political parties.
