CHENNAI, JAN. 31. The Speaker, K. Kalimuthu, today surprised Members and the media by retracting his earlier decision not to read the Governor's address to the House in Tamil. Shortly before the Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala, delivered the customary address, the Speaker announced that he would read the Tamil version after the former completed the address in English. He would be doing so for the benefit of the common people who were watching the live telecast and broadcast of the day's proceedings by Doordarshan and All-India Radio. Though some political parties demanded that the Tamil translation of the address be read in the Assembly, Mr. Kalimuthu announced on Friday it would not be done in keeping with the practice adopted in the last two years. After the completion of the address, it would be recorded in the Assembly proceedings that the translated version was taken as read by the Speaker, he had stated pointing out that the same practice was adopted by several other State Assemblies.
Request from public
Shortly after the Business Advisory Meeting (BAC), Mr. Kalimuthu told reporters the decision not to read the Governor's address was changed following requests from the public. The Speaker said as per the schedule finalised by the BAC, which met after the Governor's address, the current session would go on till February 7. Obituary references would be made on the demise of former MLAs and condolence resolutions passed on the death of the former Prime Minister, P.V. Narasimha Rao; Carnatic music exponent, M.S. Subbulakshmi, and sitting Members, S.S. Thirunavukkarasu and K. Sudarsanam, tomorrow. The House will discuss the motion of thanks to the Governor's address on February 2, 3 and 4. On February 7, the Leader of the Opposition will present his views, followed by the Chief Minister's reply.
