NEW DELHI, JAN. 31 .The accounts section of the Transport Department today became the first department of the Delhi Government to be granted ISO 9001-2000 certification by the University of Michigan, US, for its accounts related services. The certificate was presented today to the Delhi Transport Minister, Haroon Yusuf, and the Transport Commissioner, Rajiv Talwar, by two executives of AQSR Internaitonal Inc, Anil Choubey and Priya Arora, at the recently refurbished RTO on Rajpur Road in North Delhi. Receiving the certificate, Mr Yusuf said the Delhi Government wants to make Delhi a modern city and has taken to computerisation and make-up of various Regional Transport Offices as a step in the direction. Pointing out that the computerisation would help in payment of taxes and registration of vehicles, he said it would also remove chances of exploitation of citizens. Averring that in the past six years the Delhi Government has tried to modernise the transport system and tried to bring more and more private transport users on the public transport system, he said, along with the Delhi Metro, high capacity buses were being introduced to make travel more comfortable. While two of these buses would arrive in February 2005, the remaining four would arrive soon after, he said. The purchase order for the buses had been issued to M/s Tata Motors for supply of six high capacity buses. The Minister said bus corridors were also being planned for facilitating travel on hitherto congested roads, which would be redesigned for the purpose. For the High Capacity Bus System and Electric Trolley Bus System, the project consultants, RITES and TRIPP of IIT Delhi, had submitted a feasibility study report of two priority corridors namely Ambedkar Nagar to ISBT Kashmere Gate for HCBS and Hari Nagar to Central Secretariat to ETB. The pre-qualification bids for construction of the pilot corridor of HCBS from Ambedkar Nagar to Moolchand had already been called while the proposal to set up a Special Purpose Company for HCBS/ETB was under consideration of the Delhi Government. Mr Yusuf also said that an elevated Ring Road was also under consideration to ease traffic flow and facilitate travel by fast moving vehicles. An agreement had been signed by Delhi Government with M/s Infrastructure Leasing and Finance Services to conduct a feasibility study regarding construction of an elevated Ring Road in Delhi and submit its report within six months. With the period about to lapse, the report was expected by February 15, 2005. Of the view that use of public transport by more people would result in less congestion and consequently less stress for citizens, the Minister said it had been found that road rage was directly related to the stress under which people work and drive their vehicles. Once they were able to use public transport that would save them from a lot of stress.
