This Day That Age
Mr. B.P. Patel, General Manager of the Municipal-owned Bombay Electric Supply and Transport Corporation, on January 31 recommended a gradual abolition of tram cars in Bombay. Addressing the Commerce Graduates' Association in Bombay, he said the slow-moving tram cars, which created perpetual traffic problems in the city, were a great strain on the exchequer incurring an annual loss of Rs.37 lakhs on an average. He said it was not advisable to take the trams off the roads immediately but to allow them to wear out and not be replaced. On an average about five lakh passengers use the tram daily.
