dated February 02, 1955: China invited to talks

The U.N. Security Council on January 31 night voted to invite a representative of People's China to participate in its Formosa Straits ceasefire discussion and then adjourned indefinitely to await a reply from Peking. Only Nationalist China opposed the adjournment. The Council, after adopting its agenda by placing a New Zealand resolution on a Formosa ceasefire ahead of the Soviet resolution denouncing what it called United States' aggression against China, voted the invitation to Peking by nine votes to one (Nationalist China) with one abstention (Soviet Union). It also voted to take up the Soviet accusation after discussing the New Zealand resolution. A Soviet amendment seeking priority for its allegations was defeated by ten votes to one.
