This Day That Age
Opening a week-long conference of the Commonwealth Prime Ministers in London on January 31, the British Premier, Sir Winston Churchill stressed that the Formosa crisis was of the utmost delicacy and called for great care in any joint effort to ease the tension. His reference to Formosa came in a brief speech welcoming the Prime Ministers and reviewing the international situation. Sir Winston discussed the prospects of world peace against the background of the hydrogen bomb. Three of Asia's leading statesmen also dealt with the problems of Formosa, South-East Asia and the Middle East in brief speeches. Conference sources said Prime Minister Nehru referred in general terms to Formosa and the latest situation in Indo-China.
