Women's Studies Centre inaugurated

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, FEB. 1. Research on the productive role of women in society will be the main activity at the Women's Studies Centre inaugurated at the PSGR Krishnammal College for Women here today.

A report prepared by the Centre said that researchers would collect information and evaluate data sources to determine whether "developmental strategies, policy choices and interventions in the economic sphere" had tilted the balance in favour of men and placed women at a disadvantage.

Legislative measures, social stereotypes, gender issues and the impact of democracy on women would also come under review.

By going through case studies, the Centre would try to find ways and means for women to overcome distress, live happy lives and control their emotions, thoughts and behaviour.

Counselling sessions

There were plans to organise counselling sessions to relieve tension, and help women attain goals in life. While studying the working pattern of women, the Centre would collect data on the number of employed women in Coimbatore and take note of any disparities between men and women regarding status and earnings.

The Centre would introduce gender perspectives in the curriculum of all disciplines in the college, make students aware of women's rights issues, develop a database on women's issues, disseminate research findings to the community, network with educational institutions interested in similar work, and conduct outreach programmes for women in rural and urban areas.

Short-term course

There were also plans for a short-term course on `Women and Law in India' that would cover topics such as gender justice, access to law, equality between men and women, and laws regarding inheritance, labour, human rights, prevention of violence and representation of women in media.
