ERODE, FEB. 1. The District Collector, D. Karthikeyan, today warned fishermen against the use of explosives to catch fish in the Cauvery or Bhavani rivers. He told reporters here today that dead fish were found floating on River Cauvery on Sunday and the Pollution Control Board, the Fisheries Department and health officials have been asked to collect water samples to ascertain the cause of death. If the death was caused because of pollution, action would be taken against firms discharging untreated effluents to the river, he said. Earlier the Collector distributed identity cards to the physically challenged persons. He said the physically challenged persons would get monthly pension. Last year 600 such persons were provided with cards and this calendar year, so far 124 persons were provided with such cards. The Collector said that Rs. 5.10 lakhs has been given as Maintenance Grant to 280 physically challenged persons during 2004-2005. Educational grant of Rs. 3.48 lakhs was given to 500 physically challenged persons and 47 such persons were provided bank loan subsidy of Rs. 94,000.
