Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to the dismissal of Major Rehman Hussain, an accused in the Handwara rape case. The Army authorities were quick to dismiss the officer to set a precedent. However, incidents of lawlessness involving Army personnel have been occurring for some time now. While they may be aberrations and may not reflect the character of the entire force, the fact that incidents involving personnel from jawan to high-ranking officers occur so often shows that something is wrong somewhere. Unless the Army does some introspection, the situation may go from bad to worse.
R. Shafarunnisa,
Sir, The Hussain dismissal and the Farakka Express episode call for the enforcement of higher standards of discipline, and proper training for defence personnel in behavioural science. Adopting a victim's family alone will not help.
