Weingartner spoils Hingis' comeback

PATTAYA, FEB. 1. Former World No. 1 Martina Hingis' comeback was spoiled on Tuesday when Marlene Weingartner of Germany beat her 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 in a first round match at the $170,000 (euro 131,000) WTA Volvo women's Open.

Fifth-seeded Ai Sugiyama of Japan crashed out of the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo after an opening-day 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 loss to Italy's Roberta Vinci.

Sugiyama has been hampered by a sore ankle of late but refused to use that as an excuse for Tuesday's early exit.
