DAVANGERE, FEB. 1. M.N. Narayanaswamy, chief executive officer of Davangere Zilla Panchayat, said that organic farming was not an option but a necessity. He called upon women farmers to take up organic farming to earn more. Inaugurating a State-level technical workshop for women farmers here on Tuesday, Mr. Narayanaswamy stressed the need to conserve natural resources, such as water and soil. He said that the water table had been depleting and urged the farmers to construct check dams and krishi hondas (farm pits) to recharge groundwater. He also called upon the farmers to go in for rainwater harvesting projects. H. Venkataramanappa, project director of the zilla panchayat, and Shivamurthappa, Joint Director for Agriculture, spoke. M.A. Singlachar, technical advisor, Women Youth Training and Extention programme, which conducted the workshop, participated.
