Exports, M800 pull down Maruti sales

NEW DELHI, FEB. 1. Affected by decline in exports and demand for Maruti 800 model, the country's biggest carmaker Maruti Udyog today reported a 1.2 per cent drop in sales for January at 48,544 units against 49,141 units in the same month last year.

While exports dropped to 3,244 units from 4,832 units in January 2004, a decline of 32.9 per cent, sales of Maruti 800 slipped by 37.1 per cent to 9,625 units from 15,301 units.

At the same time the company achieved the highest-ever sales in the domestic market in January at 45,300 units, an increase of 2.2 per cent over 44,309 units sold in the same month last year. The hatchback Alto, which has been brining in numbers as sales of M800 decline, also saw the highest ever sale in the month under review at 13,117 units.

Total sales, including exports, in the ten months of this fiscal stood at 4.38 lakh units recording a 16.2 per cent increase over 3.77 lakh units in the same period last fiscal. Exports in the period saw a marginal growth of 3.3 per cent at 41,202 units against 39,872 units in the ten months of last fiscal.

Domestic sales in April-January period went up by 17.7 per cent to 3.97 lakh units from 3.37 lakh units. Notably, Maruti 800 sales in this period declined 29.3 per cent to 97,972 units from 1.38 lakh units.
