The Head of Consumer Electronics and GSM, LG Electronics India, C. M. Singh, unveiling the new range of 3G mobile phone handsets in New Delhi on Tuesday.
NEW DELHI, FEB. 1. Even as the telecom regulator's recommendations over spectrum for 3G mobile service are awaited, LG Electronics India today became the first vendor to introduce 3G mobile handsets in India anticipating that the service would be launched by the end of 2005. The Korean company rolled out four 3G-enabled GSM models with prices ranging from Rs. 16,000 to Rs. 30,000. The models offer live video streaming, gaming, continuous video recording, downloads among others at a speed of 384 kbps (as against a GPRS speed of 48 kbps). The other features of 3G are multimedia player such as MP3, e-mail, video MMS, 72 polyphonic. LG Electronics India also announced a new value-added service in the form of a website, www.in.wowlg.com, where ring tones, graphics, games and photos can be downloaded. According to Deba Ghosal, head (brand management and product planning), the company has plans to start manufacturing 3G-enabled handsets at its Pune plant by early next year, "We want to initiate the product in the market before the service starts. With 3G networks becoming a reality in India in times to come, the idea behind showcasing the latest 3G handsets in India is to make people aware of its features and LG has taken the lead in that,'' C. M. Singh, head (consumer electronics and GSM), LG Electronics India, said. LG Electronics India, a part of the $30 billion Korean major LG, is gearing up to push its market share in the GSM segment by focussing on colour and camera phones. The Korean major was aiming at settling two million GSM phones this year as against half a million last year, Mr. Ghosal said, adding that they expected that gradually 10 per cent of the total handset market would migrate to 3G service.
