NEW DELHI, FEB. 1. P.K. Hormese Tharakan, former Director General of Police, Kerala, today took over as the new chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) succeeding C.D. Sahay who retired yesterday. The new RAW chief, who is designated as Secretary (R) in the Cabinet Secretariat, has served in RAW for over two decades with important stints in Europe and Nepal. He will be retiring in June this year. Mr. Tharakan served the Kerala police after his induction in the Indian Police Service (IPS) till 1976, when he was short-listed for Central deputation and joined the Cabinet Secretariat in September 1976. He returned to serve the Kerala police in 1985. He was again empanelled for Central deputation and joined the Cabinet Secretariat for 12 more years before returning to Kerala in July 2001. Mr. Tharakan takes over at a time when the Central Government is engaged in the major task of overhauling the external intelligence agency, including strengthening its counter-intelligence system. The Government move follows the adverse attention RAW received after one of its senior officials, Rabindra Singh, managed to give a slip after allegedly passing sensitive information to other intelligence agencies.
