"Forget feuds, relive Cuddapah's past"

By Our Staff Reporter

The State Election Commissioner, A,V.S. Reddy, addressing the valedictory function of `Cuddapotsavalu' on Tuesday.

CUDDAPAH, FEB. 1. The State Election Commissioner, A.V.S. Reddy, on Tuesday called for a comprehensive strategy for the development of Cuddapah district.

Speaking at the valedictory function of the five-day `Cuddapotsavalu' here, he called for identification of geo-physical and human resources and their documentation. He advised people to change the cropping pattern, land utilisation and their attitude.

Media's fault

Mr. Reddy, who hails from Patur village in Nandalur mandal, called himself the `son of the soil' and dubbed Cuddapah the gateway to Andhra culture. He said factionalism, murders and party feuds in the district were magnified by films and media. The focus must be on the times of Krishnadevaraya, Annamacharya and Vemana, he noted.

Most welfare programmes since Independence failed as all categories were treated as beneficiaries.

He suggested classification of beneficiaries into illiterate, educated, semi-skilled and skilled ones.

Abode of poets

The district was the abode of poets, litterateurs, administrators, judicial and technical experts, he said. The eminent poet, Puttaparthi Narayanacharyulu, who wrote in 14 languages, was the judge for Gnanpeeth and several other awards, but he was not given any awards, he lamented. Mr. Reddy was felicitated by the Collector, Jayesh Ranjan and SP, V.C. Sajjanar.

The former Pulivendula MLA, S. Purushotham Reddy, Bishop of Cuddapah Diocese, M.D. Prakasam, Vaasthu expert, Gouru Tirupati Reddy, Telugu pandit, G. Hanumantha Rao, national hockey umpire, B. Sudhakar, IOC dealer, V. Gurivi Reddy, and folk artiste, S. Pullaiah, were also felicitated. Cultural programmes followed.
