`Farm labourers need immediate assistance'

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, FEB. 1. With the intrusion of seawater into a vast tract of farm land following the December 26 tsunami in Pondicherry and Karaikal regions, the farmers have lost their crop and the soil had become saline and suffered damage.

The administration should immediately provide an assistance of Rs. 25,000 for every hectare of land lost and farm labourers and women workers should be granted the assistance, said the secretary of the Pondicherry unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist Leninist) S. Balasubramanian, here today.

The damage to the farmland was so severe that it would take several years to restore the fertility of the soil and to fully reclaim the land.

Water bodies were also affected and coastal villages, particularly Vanjoor in Karaikal, bore the brunt of tsunami. The cattle population too was affected. The administration should provide adequate relief to cattle owners and dairy farmers, he said.
