HYDERABAD, FEB. 1. Kavan Kariappa, a 24-year-old jockey from Coorg, died in hospital on Tuesday evening having suffered extensive damage to his brain. Kariappa had a fall when riding Millionaire from Satheesh's stable on January 23 and was rushed to hospital in an unconscious state. A popular jockey, he had enjoyed the affection not only of his colleagues and trainers but the racing public as well. He was a loyal rider for Dr. M.A.M. Ramaswamy and Satheesh, to whom he was attached for over five years in a career spanning a decade. Having ridden at every centre across the country, he brought home 290 winners, including one in a Classic, the Ooty Fillies Trial Stakes. He was introduced to the profession by his maternal uncle, Poonacha. Pursuing an M.A. Sociology degree by correspondence, Kariappa had cleared the first year examinations recently. He is survived by his mother and a brother.
