Sarpanches threaten stir

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, FEB. 1. The Andhra Pradesh Sarpanches Association has threatened to launch a stir if the State Government does not call them for discussions and if it did not drop plans to go ahead with plans for special revenue secretaries.

At a press conference here on Tuesday, the association president, P. Venkatarama Reddy, regretted that though it had been months since the sub-committee had been formed to look into the tier system of functioning and the devolution of powers to panchayat and revenue secretaries, it was yet to file even a preliminary report.

Mr. Reddy said officials should primarily function in service to people and not just to please their political masters.

A group of 155 sarpanches had been selected to go on a tour to Kerala to study the system of devolution of powers, Mr. Reddy said.
