Award for RTC in fuel saving

HYDERABAD: The State-owned Road Transport Corporation has bagged the national award for fuel conservation measures for the 26th year in succession. Also, The Executive Director, Engineering, M.V. Nagavender Rao, received the Petroleum Conservation Research Association's `Special Achievement Award' for outstanding contribution to the transport sector. Mr. Rao received the awards from the Union Minister for Information, S. Jaipal Reddy, in New Delhi on Monday.

Muttukur MRO suspended

NELLORE: The district Collector, B. Rajsekhar, has issued orders suspending the Mandal Revenue Officer (MRO), Muttukur, Suseela, for alleged dereliction of duty pertaining to land distribution and preparation of passbooks. The Collector also suspended five panchayat secretaries of the mandal.

Lifer for 2 in girl murder case

ADILABAD: The II Additional District and Sessions Judge (Fast Track Court), Adilabad, K.V. Vijay Kumar, on Tuesday sentenced to life two persons for rape and murder of a Gond tribal girl. They were also sentenced to undergo 17 more years of imprisonment to run concurrently and fined Rs. 12,000 each on three counts. The duo -- Md. Ahmed alias Kayarkar Vasant and Sk. Ismail alias Ramesh of Kapu Sangvi in Bela mandal -- had raped the girl of Gond Sangvi village on June 29, 2001, and later smashed her head with a rock.

10th class student ends life

VIZIANAGARAM: A 10th class student, Santosh Kumar (15), of an English medium school at Cantonment here committed suicide by hanging himself in his house on Monday night. His father, M. Bhaskara Rao, a railway police constable, found the body on Tuesday, according to the incharge SI of I Town police station, P. Vijaya Kumar.

Farmer commits suicide

CUDDAPAH: A farmer, Chowdaiah (42), committed suicide by consuming pesticide at Thummalapalle in B. Kodur mandal on Tuesday. Chowdaiah, who owned four acres of land, incurred debts of Rs. 1 lakh due to crop losses and failure of borewells, according to the police.

Probe into AU affairs today

HYDERABAD: Justice Vaman Rao, retired judge of the High Court, who is enquiring into the affairs of Andhra University (AU), will hear arguments at 2 p.m. on February 2 at Visakhapatnam Collectorate. If necessary, the hearing maybe continued at 10.30 a.m. following day, according to a press release here.

Save RTC Day observed

HYDERABAD: Workers of the APSRTC observed `Save RTC Day' throughout the State on Tuesday by sporting black badges on duty. They appealed to people to spare buses during agitations. M. Nageswara Rao, general secretary, APSRTC National Mazdoor Sangh, in a statement, said an `RTC protection council,' consisting of staff and employees' unions, would undertake hunger strike in districts headquarters on February 11.

Award for NGRI scientist

HYDERABAD: A scientist of the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) here, Shakeel Ahmed, has been awarded the International Prize for Water Science-2004 at Cannes water symposium. The award has been conferred on Dr. Ahmed for his continued efforts in promoting international collaboration in water sciences. He is heading the Indo-French centre for groundwater research.

Rao executive director of NTPC

HYDERABAD: L.V. Rao on Tuesday assumed charge here as Executive Director (ED), southern region of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC). Before this assignment, he was ED, western region, Mumbai. He had worked in the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh State Electricity Board and the Central Electricity Authority, according to a press release.

Land struggle panel formed

HYDERABAD: The BJP president, N. Indrasena Reddy, has constituted a land struggle committee with former Union minister, Ch. Vidyasagar Rao, as chairman. A. Govardhan, State secretary, is convener of the committee. N.P. Venkateswar Choudhay, vice-president, D. Surendra Reddy and K. Bojjaiah, Executive Committee members, constitute the committee. The president and general secretary of the Dalit Morcha and Girijana Morcha will be ex-officio members.

3 electrocuted in Kaddiram

Srikakulam: Three persons -- S. Sangamesu (34), Gandikota Ramana (22) and a teenaged boy, yet to be identified -- belonging to Nookalada of Balijapeta mandal in Vizianagaram district were electrocuted when they were trying to dig out the cast iron basement of a telecommunication pole in Kaddiram area in Amadalavalasa Municipality in the early hours of Tuesday. The pole fell on the live wire of an electrical pole, resulting in the instantaneous death of the three.

Nominated to Sports Authority board

WARANGAL: The general secretary of the Andhra Pradesh Youth Congress, Rajanala Srihari, has been nominated as Director on the board of Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP). According to a press release here, a directive to this affect was issued from the Chief Minister's Office.

VPT record in cargo handling

VISAKHAPATNAM: Handling the highest ever cargo throughput for a single month, the Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) established a national record in January. According to a release, the port handled 47.39 lakh tonnes, surpassing its own earlier record of 45.86 lakh tonnes in July 2001. During the last month, the port achieved the highest export of iron ore and pellets -- 18.01 lakh tonnes -- for any single month surpassing its previous record of 16.42 lakh tonnes in March 2004.

Rain at many places in Telangana

Hyderabad: There was rain at many places in Telangana and at a few places in Rayalaseema on Tuesday. Bhadrachalam recorced a rainfall of 5 cm while Hakimpet airport, Medak, Kadiri and Madhira recorded 2 cm each. Minimum temperatures fell in Telangana. The day's lowest of 13 degree Celsius was accounted by Adilabad. Isolated rain is likely in coastal Andhra.

Panel to review works

TIRUPATI: A legislature panel will visit the district from February 7 to 9 to inspect and review developmental works taken up under Neeru Meeru. According to an official release, the panel members will hold separate meetings with the Collector at Chittoor, the Regional Joint Endowments Commissioner at Kanipakam, the TTD Executive Officer and forest officials at Tirumala and Srikalahasteeswara temple officials at Sri Kalahasti town.

Cassettes released

TIRUPATI: The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams has released audio cassettes of devotional songs by Annamayya and other noted composers, besides video cassettes of various festivals conducted at the Venkateswara temple. All the cassettes and CDs were made by the TTD's Drusya Sravana Project.

Held on power theft charge

NELLORE: Vigilance Wing officials of AP Transco, Nellore, led by the Inspector, P. Madhusudhana Rao, arrested one Rachuru Raghu at Navalak Gardens, Nellore, on Tuesday, for allegedly illegally using electricity for domestic and aqua cultivation purposes. He has been sent for judicial remand till February 15.

Award for ex-engineer

Tirupati: India International Friendship Society has selected M. Nagaraja Rao, a former Engineer-in-Chief (Public Health) for the Rashtriya Gaurav award and certificate of excellence. The award will be presented at a function in Hyderabad on March 11.

Prizes for NSS volunteers

Tirupati: The NSS volunteers of Sri Padmavathi mahila Viswa Vidyalayam returned home with a huge haul of prizes from the National Integration Camp that concluded in Karimnagar on January 29. The NSS coordinator, B. Suguna, said, N. Sirlatha of M.Sc. (Food Science and Nutrition) was declared best volunteer at the camp, while P. Hemalatha, B. Swapna and B. Lakshmidevi bagged prizes in mime, skit and group discussion competitions.

30 AIYF activists held

Kurnool: Thirty activists of AIYF were taken into custody for storming the District Medical and Health Officer's (DMHO) office here on Tuesday. The activists who conducted a survey on facilities in various primary health centres across the district, wanted to present a memorandum to the DMHO. However, they sent out the staff from the office on the ground that the officers did not give a proper response and staged a demonstration.
