DDA to have its own server

By Gaurav Vivek Bhatnagar

NEW DELHI, FEB. 1 .The Delhi Development Authority is installing a web server of its own so that people getting in touch with it over the Internet have better access to it. A tender has already been floated by the DDA and it is now evaluating the bid for finalising the contract.

According to a senior official, the DDA is headed for a major computerisation drive which would ultimately allow people to access information about their properties on the Internet, so it was felt that a dedicated server was needed to perform the job well.

At present the DDA does not have a dedicated server and its website ddadelhi.com works on leased line due to which there are several limitations. "Since a customer's access to our server is linked through this main server and the line has limited load capacity, often downloading of information becomes difficult as the line gets disconnected midway,'' the official said.

Further, the official said, the limited capacity of the line prevents the DDA from putting large volumes of information on the system or from launching various other interactive programmes which would attract large-scale interaction with customers. Also, as the DDA server is operational only during office hours from around 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., it prevents customers from accessing any information at other hours of the day.

However, once the DDA has its own server, the official said, not only will there be fewer breakages in linkage, the quality and quantity of information flow would also increase. It would allow more interactive functions over the Internet and almost all kinds of information, forms and payments would become possible over the net.

Working 24 hours a day, the DDA's server will also keep people well informed about developments as it would be updated around three times a day. The official said as the DDA was also in the process of computerising most of its departments and integrating them, the server would allow access to a wide range of information.

Though the tender for the server had been floated some time ago, the contract has not been finalised as yet as only VSNL had bid for the tender. However, following some detailed discussions on the subject, the DDA is hopeful of having the new server in place within a few months time.

With this server coming into being applicants to the DDA's various schemes will also be able to learn details about their financial transactions on the date of payment itself. As of now however, this is not possible. The authenticated payment details cannot be had on the computer system since the bought up space on the existing server is not enough for the DDA to allow too many transactions over Internet.

Meanwhile, another official said DDA was also thinking of going in for a new tender for the server so that the number of bids were more and the allocation of the job became easier. But either which way, with the top officials keen on modernising this important land owning and land development agency, the DDA is headed for a major upgradation in computerisation and Internet linkage.
