BANGALORE, FEB. 1. Shobha Karandlaje (BJP) today urged the Government to take measures to prevent anti-social elements operating in the forests of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts in the guise of the naxalites from joining hands with foreigners overstaying in the State, numbering around 10,000. Participating in the debate in the Legislative Council on the motion of thanks to the Governor for his address to the joint session of the legislature, she urged the Government to detect all such foreigners and deport them, if their stay is illegal. At the same time, naxalite activity, which had created tension in the two districts, should be dealt with suitably. Supporting her, Arun Machaiah (Independent) called for similar measures in Kodagu district as the people there were upset over the treatment meted out to them under the Land Revenue Act. While there are only three types of land under cultivation tari, khushki and bagayitu in other parts of the State, there are more than 32 types of land in Kodagu district, which have not been brought under the Act. Under this system, the Government is the owner of all the land, not the people. If the situation is allowed to continue, there is the likelihood of naxalite influence growing in the district, he said.
