J.S. Dhillon takes charge

Bidar Feb. 1. Air Commodore J.S. Dhillon took over as Air Officer Commanding of the Air Force Station in Bidar today. He replaces Air Commodore Ajit Singh who has been transferred. A ceremonial parade was held on the occasion, which saw a magnificent aerobatic display by the Suryakiran team. Air Commodore Dhillon was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as a fighter pilot in June 1974. He is an alumnus of the Defence Services Staff College and was "mentioned in despatches" for his valuable contribution during the Kargil operations. He has more than 3,500 hours of flying experience on different fighter aircraft, said a press release.

State's tableau bags first prize

Bangalore Feb. 1. Even as the Government was discussing the preparations for next year's Mahamastakabhisheka for the gigantic statue of Gomateshwara at Shravanabelagola came the news from New Delhi of the State's tableau on the religious event held every 12 years being adjudged the best at this year's Republic Day parade. The Director of Information, C. Chandrashekar, will receive the prize from the Defence Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, in New Delhi. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, has expressed happiness over the prize and congratulated the officials of the Department of Information for designing the tableau.

New IT Chief Commissioner

Bangalore Feb. 1. J.K. Rao (in picture), Director-General of Income Tax (Investigation), Karnataka and Goa, has taken charge as Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Bangalore I. He belongs to the 1970 batch of the Indian Revenue Service and has become the senior-most officer and administrative head of the Income Tax Department in the Karnataka and Goa region.

Commission bifurcated

BANGALORE FEB. 1. The National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (NCSCST) has been bifurcated into two separate commissions — the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) and the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST). The commission's office in the State will hereafter function as the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, III Floor, D Wing, Kendriya Sadan, Koramangala, Bangalore 560 034, says a Press Information Bureau press release. Petitions/representations pertaining to Scheduled Tribes may be addressed to the NCST, State Office, E-100/50, Shivajinagar, Arera, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh 462 016 (ph: 0755-2578272, 2576530).

BESCOM conducts raids

Bangalore Feb. 1. The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company says its vigilance wing raided five villages and registered 38 cases of power theft on Tuesday. A note from the Vigilance Superintendent of Police, H.S. Venkatesh, said raids were conducted at Huluvadi, Appigere, Byadarahalli, M.K. Doddi and Sautanahalli coming under the Channapatna Operations and Maintenance unit of the Ramanagaram Vigilance Police Station limits.

Poojary convenes meeting

Bangalore Feb. 1. The KPCC President, B. Janardhana Poojary, has convened a meeting of Ministers, Congress legislators, presidents of district Congress units, presidents of zilla panchayats and others here on Thursday evening with regard to the preparations for the gram panchayat elections to be held on February 25 and 27. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, will participate in the meeting to be held at the Ambedkar Bhavan on Miller's Road here.

Elocution competition

CHITRADURGA FEB. 1. A district-level elocution competition about population explosion has been organised for pre-university and degree students in Chitradurga on February 9 and February 10 by the district's Health and Family Welfare Department.

"The techniques to stabilise population," will be the subject for pre-university students, which will be held on February 9; and for degree students, the subject is "How population control can provide impetus to the development of the nation," which will be held on February 10.

Interested students can contact the District Health Officer, an official release said.

Tribute to

H. Narasimhaiah

CHITRADURGA FEB. 1. The students of S.J.M. English Medium High School, Chitradurga, paid tribute to noted rationalist, H. Narasimhaiah, by dedicating a science exhibition to his memory.

Speaking at the inaugural function of science exhibition "Text to trail" here on Tuesday, G.N. Mallikarjunappa, chief advisor to the school, said that such exhibitions will be a yearly affair and will be dedicated to H. Narasimhaiah.

P. Ramaiah, Block Education Officer, inaugurated the science fair. The former president of the zilla panchayat, Soubhagya Basavarajan, and special officer, H. Seshagiri Rao, spoke.

The meeting observed a two-minute silence at the commencement of the function to condole H. Narasimhaiah's death.

Suicide

DAVANGERE FEB. 1. A married woman committed suicide at K.T.J. Nagar here on Monday.

The police said that the deceased, Pavithra (25), daughter of Bhopathi, an assistant sub-inspector at Chitradurga, was married to an employee of Bangalore Electricity Supply Company three years ago. Her husband and in-laws allegedly demanded more dowry. Troubled over this, Pavithra committed suicide, the police said.

Based on Mr. Bhopathi's complaint, the police have arrested Pavithra's husband and in-laws.

Compensation

BIDAR FEB. 1. The District Methodist Church has demanded that the Government release compensation for rebuilding the church at Yadalapur village that was damaged in the hailstorm on Saturday. The tower of the church had been completely destroyed and the roof has developed cracks, said Ravi David, member of the church management executive committee.

Pension

BIDAR FEB. 1. Freedom fighters who participated in the liberation struggle of the Hyderabad Karnataka region can apply to the Union Government for monthly pension. Those who took part in the agitation between March 1947 and September 1948 in Bidar, Gulbarga, Raichur, and Koppal should approach B.G. Shetkar, president of the Bidar Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Those who do not have any records of their contribution to the struggle have to obtain a recommendation letter from an eminent freedom fighter who was jailed for at least two years during the struggle.
