KOTTAYAM, FEB. 1. The 21st International Book Fair here is receiving good patronage. Publishers from far and near have showcased their products in 146 stalls. Books both creative and academic dominate the show. The 12-volume International Encyclopaedia of Education presented by the Standard Literature Company, Kolkota, costs Rs. 1,65,000 while the life sketches of prominent Indians published by Sahitya Akademi is available at Rs. 4 each. One book that caught the attention of visitors is the collection of sketches by Leonardo Da Vinci, which costs Rs. 8,500. The organisers said youngsters were attracted to academic books and publishers in this category were doing good business. Books on information technology, business administration, entrance examinations, migration, new job markets etc. were in demand. The excellent response to educational CDs and DVDs appeared as an indicator to the penetration of personal computer in the area, especially among middle class, said one of the participants, who had already commenced booking for tutorial CDs which did not need a PC. It could be played if you had a CD player at home. Started in 1985 by the Darsana Cultural Society, sponsored by the Catholic Church, the fair is one of the oldest book fairs in the State.
