CMC students move court against fee hike

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, FEB. 1. First year merit quota MBBS students of the Cooperative Medical College (CMC), Kochi, have approached the Kerala High Court against the demand for a hike in the fee for the second year course.

According to the petitioners, the demand for a hike was made by the Director, Cooperative Academy of Professional Education, through the Principal of the College.

Circular issued

The director had issued a circular stating that the students admitted in the Government quota were liable to pay tuition fee in full in the second year onwards at the rate applicable to students in the self-financing medical colleges.

The circular said that those who were not willing to pay the amount should withdraw their admission.

The petitioners said that the college run by the Cooperative Academy of Processional Education came in between the definition of the self-financing medical colleges and a government medical college.

The petition also said that the Government was holding majority shares in the cooperative academy.

The petitioners also sought a declaration that the college did not come within the definition of self-financing colleges as provided under the Kerala Self-financing Professional Colleges (Prohibition of capitation fee and procedure for admission and fixation of fees).

The petitioners pointed out that the medical college had received financial assistance from the Government.

The Government had sanctioned Rs. 150 crores for the college.

The action of the medical college amounted to profiteering, which had been banned by the Supreme Court.

The petitioners also sought a declaration that they were bound to pay the fee as applicable to the students in the government medical colleges.
