THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 1. Several inquiry commissions appointed by the Government have failed to adhere to the procedures laid down under the Commission of Inquiry Act of 1952, according to the Assembly Committee on Papers Laid on the Table. The panel, in a report to the Assembly today, noted that, under the Act, the inquiry commissions were bound to submit their findings to the Government within the time allotted to them. The Government, on its part, has to lay the findings on the table of the House along with the `action taken reports' within six months of receiving them from the commissions. Briefing presspersons, the panel chairman, P.C. George, said the Government had appointed nearly 100 inquiry commissions since the formation of the State. But, not even the Government knew what had happened to the reports. Some had been accepted by the Government and some rejected, but there was no information about the fate of many others, he said. He said the Assembly panel had asked the Government to inform how many inquiry commissions had been appointed during the last 10 years and what the topics of inquiry were. But the Government could not give the details, he said. This was because the General Administration Department did not have a mechanism to monitor the progress of commission inquiries ordered by different departments. The panel suggested setting up of such a mechanism.
