Kottiyam sex scandal victim's brother confesses to murder

By Our Staff Reporter

KOLLAM, FEB. 1. Shyju, 17, brother of the Kottiyam sex scandal victim, Shiney, was today arrested on charges of murdering his sister.

The Kollam SP, S. Sreejith, who supervised the investigation, said that Shyju was arrested after he confessed to having murdered Shiney. He was produced before the Juvenile Court here this evening and remanded to custody.

Of the 24 persons listed as accused in the sex scandal case, 20 were arrested in May last. All of them are now out on bail. The charge sheet in the case is yet to be filed as the investigation is still on.

Shyju told the police that he killed Shiney as she was adamant on being a hooker. They used to often quarrel on that score. Shyju said that out of shame, he often stayed away from home.

The registration of the sex scandal case did not act as a deterrent, he said. It had made her even bolder as she used to threaten those who tried to advise her. He told the police that she had threatened to point out such people as those who had exploited her sexually.

Strangled to death

Hence no one had intervened. Nobody had dared to inform the police about this because of fear that it might boomerang on them, he said.

Shyju told the police that he used to be often mocked by friends because of his sister's way of life. Though he had often begged with her to give up her life as a hooker, she reacted violently all the time.

On Friday evening, there was a tiff between them and she had allegedly slapped him. He said that he poured out all the anger against her by strangling her to death with a `dupatta.'

When reporters asked him whether he was sorry about it, Shyju said that he only felt that he had done something good for society and himself. "Though I was earning on my own by working for a sound system concern, all the time I was upset and angry because of my sister," he said. The Kollam Dy.SP, M.N. Jayaprakash, who headed the investigations said that initially Shyju remained cool so as to avoid getting suspected by the police. But the police included him in the list of suspects. He later broke down and confessed to the murder.

Case registration

Mr. Sreejith said that after registration of the case, Shiney was admitted to a school at Thiruvananthapuram under the care of Abhaya Centre. But the school authorities had to send her back since she often threatened to commit suicide. Shiney's death would not affect progress of the case, he said.
