Girl's death will not help accused, says Chandy

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 1. The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, assured the Assembly today that the death of the victim in the Kottiyam sex scandal case, Shiney, will not by itself help the accused escape punishment.

Making a strong defence of the Government stance in the case, Mr. Chandy said the statement made by the girl before the Judicial First Class Magistrate, Kollam, under Section 164 of the Indian Penal Code would ensure that the accused were are punished.

In fact, the situation is more serious for the accused now that there is no chance of their getting an opportunity to manipulate evidence or win over the girl. The police have built up a strong case and the charge sheet is almost ready. The police have arrested 20 of the 24 accused in the case. The remaining four were at large and efforts were on to arrest them, he said.

Initially, the Chief Minister did not go into the details of the murder. However, when the Opposition alleged that the girl had been done away to shield the guilty, he said that the girl's brother had admitted to having killed her. He termed the incident as "shocking".

Responding to the Opposition charge that those who were yet to be arrested were the high and the mighty, he said that they were an autorickshaw driver, a coolie, a jobless Gulf returnee and a farmer.

Callousness alleged

Earlier, seeking adjournment of the House to discuss the issue, P.K. Sreemathy, CPI(M), alleged that the Government had adopted a callous attitude in the case and not cared to arrest all the guilty or file a charge sheet even a year after the incident. The Leader of the Opposition, V.S. Achuthanandan, urged the Government to ensure that the murder of the victim by her own brother should not lead to acquittal of the accused.
